Our Restoration Process

Restoring Your Log Home with Care, Craft, and Clarity

At Rocco’s Log Home Restoration, we believe that restoring a log home requires more than simply replacing damaged wood and applying a new coat of stain. Every log home carries its own history, character, and set of challenges—especially in Montana’s demanding climate. Our process is built around precision, transparency, and craftsmanship so that from the very first meeting to the final walkthrough you know what’s happening, why it matters, and how your home is being protected for years to come.

Step 1: Consultation & On-Site Assessment

We begin with a full evaluation of your log home—examining exterior logs, interior surfaces, chinking, sealants, moisture issues, UV wear, insect activity, and overall structural condition. We review previous treatments, your goals, and your budget to determine the scope of restoration. After the assessment, we provide a clear written proposal outlining the work plan, materials, schedule, and pricing.

Step 2: Structural Repairs & Log Replacement

Before refinishing begins, we repair or replace compromised logs—addressing rot, insect damage, cracks, and water-penetration issues. Replacement logs are matched by species, size, and profile for a seamless appearance. We also resolve hidden problems around rooflines, windows, doors, and drainage areas to prevent further deterioration.

Step 3: Log Cleaning, Stripping & Surface Prep

We remove failing finishes, contaminants, and grime using log-safe methods such as media blasting. Surfaces are cleaned, restored, and checked for proper moisture levels to ensure new finishes adhere correctly. Any failing chinking or caulking is removed so fresh materials bond and flex as intended.

Step 4: Chinking, Caulking & Joint Sealing

We seal gaps and joints with high-performance chinking compounds that expand and contract with log movement. Old material is removed, surfaces are prepared, and new chinking is applied cleanly and evenly—improving insulation, weather-resistance, and overall structural performance.

Step 5: Staining, Sealing & Protective Finishes

We apply premium stains and sealants designed for Montana’s climate—UV-resistant, breathable, and durable. Whether transparent or richly colored, finishes are applied with precision to ensure even coverage and long-term protection against sun, moisture, and freeze-thaw cycles.

Step 6: Final Walkthrough & Maintenance Planning

We review every completed repair and finish, walk you through upkeep recommendations, and provide a maintenance plan tailored to your log home. You’ll learn how to monitor finishes, inspect joints, and protect your investment. Ongoing support and periodic check-ins are available whenever you need them.
